Question 8

An invitation without a photograph

Original opinion extract, written for practice.

At the last family lunch, my uncle put his phone away when I asked. Nobody announced that the occasion had been spoiled. We continued eating, and I discovered that a memory could begin without first being arranged in rows. I like photographs. I keep several which make me laugh before I can explain why. What I dislike is the assumption that entering a room means agreeing to leave it inside everyone else’s camera. Some days I am happy to stand in the picture; on others I would rather pass the potatoes. Ask me, and accept the answer without demanding a reason interesting enough to earn permission. There will still be a lunch. There may even be a better photograph when the people in it have chosen to be there.

Use your own words to evaluate the writer’s attitude to taking photographs at a gathering. Give details from the extract to justify your answer.
