The book inside its jacket
Original opinion extract, written for practice.
My friend says I paid too much for a book I already owned. He is correct about the words: the inexpensive copy on my shelf contains the same sentences. The new arrival has a small tear in its original jacket and a date which makes other collectors lean closer. I know how ridiculous that can sound. I also know the pleasure of holding something which entered the world before anyone knew it would be admired. What worries me is the moment I begin checking auction prices more often than opening the pages. I do not want the book reduced to an investment, but neither will I pretend its history leaves me unmoved. Perhaps collecting is most enjoyable while the object remains slightly more interesting than the ownership.
