The white gloves
Original fiction extract.
The magician gave me two pairs of white gloves to sort. One pair was immaculate: no marks, no loose threads, not even a crease across the palm. The other carried a small brown stain which he said the stage lights would reveal. I put the clean pair beside his hat. When he began the rehearsal, I watched his hands instead of the trick and missed where the coin went. He asked me to choose a glove afterwards. I chose the stained one, certain that he had hidden something in it. He had not.
