Question 13

The unphotographed concert

Original non-fiction-style practice text.

The singer asked us to keep our phones in our pockets for the first two songs. My immediate reaction was annoyance. I had paid for my seat and wanted a small recording to take home. Then the lights fell and, for once, the faces ahead of me were not surrounded by miniature copies of the stage.

I listened differently when I stopped choosing the portion I would record. The singer's quiet second verse belonged to the room for a moment before anybody could turn it into something else. That is not a mystical argument against cameras. A short clip later in the evening would still have pleased me.

The request was limited, explained and worth trying. I would resent a performance devoted to policing pockets. Two unrecorded songs, however, returned my attention more effectively than another reminder to enjoy the moment ever has.

Assess the writer’s attitude towards the request to put phones away at the concert. Use three details from the text to support your answer.
