Beautiful for whom?
Original non-fiction-style practice text.
The presenter calls another cloudless week beautiful. Outside my window, the neighbour waters the same small vegetable patch before dawn, trying to keep the plants alive. I wish forecasts would sometimes describe the weather before telling us how pleased we ought to feel about it.
Sunshine is a pleasure. I am not campaigning for a damp holiday or accusing every cheerful presenter of neglecting a farmer. But a word such as beautiful gathers many different experiences under one smiling umbrella. A dry field, an overheated bedroom and a day at the beach do not belong to the same forecast merely because the sun appears in each.
Tell us what conditions to expect and whose difficulties may increase. There will still be room for delight. It might simply become a little more informed, and less confident that everyone watching has been given the same gift.
Assess the writer’s attitude towards the weather presenter’s description of sunshine. Use three details from the text to support your answer.
