Question 9

This question is about hydrochloric acid.

a.

Dilute hydrochloric acid, HCl(aq)\text{HCl}(\text{aq})HCl(aq), reacts with many metals.

A student investigates the reactivity of four metals, W, X, Y, and Z, by adding a small, equal-sized sample of each metal to separate test tubes containing the same volume and concentration of dilute hydrochloric acid.

The student's observations are recorded in the table below:

MetalObservations
WModerate, steady bubbling; the metal slowly gets smaller
XNo bubbles produced and no visible change
YViolent effervescence; the metal disappears extremely rapidly with a large temperature rise
ZVery few bubbles produced extremely slowly on the surface of the metal

Use the observations in the table to place the four metals in order of reactivity. Place the most reactive metal first.
