Question 2

This question is about magnesium and germanium compounds.

a.

Magnesium is a metal.

The diagram shows the arrangement of the particles in magnesium:

Magnesium metallic lattice

(i) State why metals such as magnesium are good conductors of electricity.

(ii) Explain why metals such as magnesium are malleable.

[3]
b.

Germanium(IV) chloride, GeCl4\text{GeCl}_4GeCl4, and germanium(IV) oxide, GeO2\text{GeO}_2GeO2, are both covalent compounds.

GeCl4\text{GeCl}_4GeCl4 is a liquid at room temperature. GeO2\text{GeO}_2GeO2 is a solid with a high melting point.

Explain these properties in terms of the structures of the two compounds.

[5]
c.

(i) A mixture of germanium(IV) oxide and carbon reacts with chlorine to form germanium(IV) chloride and carbon dioxide.

Write a chemical equation for this reaction.

(ii) Germanium(IV) chloride reacts with sodium to form germanium and sodium chloride, NaCl\text{NaCl}NaCl.

Write a chemical equation for this reaction.
