Aluminium is a highly reactive metal, yet it is highly resistant to corrosion in everyday environments. Name the compound that forms on its surface to provide this resistance, and the element in the air that reacts with aluminium to form it.

The order of reactivity of three metals is:

  • Most reactive: zinc
  • iron
  • Least reactive: tin

Iron food cans and steel structural parts can be protected from rusting by coating them with a layer of zinc (galvanising) or tin. These protective coatings may become scratched during use.

Use the order of reactivity to suggest why coating iron with zinc continues to protect the iron even when scratched, whereas coating with tin can lead to rapid rusting of the iron once scratched.
