Question 2

Part of the pH scale is shown below:

pH 1 (strongly acidic) ⟷ pH 7 (neutral) ⟷ pH 14 (strongly alkaline) \text{pH 1 (strongly acidic) } \longleftrightarrow \text{ pH 7 (neutral) } \longleftrightarrow \text{ pH 14 (strongly alkaline)} pH 1 (strongly acidic) ⟷ pH 7 (neutral) ⟷ pH 14 (strongly alkaline)

Five chemical experiments are described below:

  • V: sodium sulfate (a neutral salt) is dissolved in pure water
  • W: carbon dioxide gas is dissolved under pressure in pure water
  • X: dilute sodium hydroxide solution is neutralised by adding an exact stoichiometric amount of dilute nitric acid
  • Y: excess potassium hydroxide solution is added to a strong acid solution
  • Z: ammonia gas is dissolved in pure water

The table below shows the pH at the start and at the end of these five experiments. Complete the table by determining the correct experiment letter (V, W, X, Y, or Z) for each of the empty boxes.
