A transport museum tested two adverts on adults who had visited the museum as children.
Advert A showed a child in an old train driver's cab. It said, “Think back to your first visit. Picture yourself pulling the polished brass whistle lever with your family beside you.” Museum records confirm that visitors had never been allowed inside the driver's cab.
Advert B gave information about the museum's current exhibitions, admission times and ticket prices.
Participants rated how confident they were that they had pulled the whistle lever during a childhood visit. Ratings ranged from 1 (not at all confident) to 7 (very confident).
| Advert shown | Mean confidence before seeing the advert | Mean confidence one week later |
|---|---|---|
| Advert A | 2.4 | 5.6 |
| Advert B | 2.5 | 2.7 |
Using your knowledge of autobiographical advertising, explain the pattern in the results and what participants shown Advert A may later remember.
