A beaker of water is placed on a tripod and gauze over a heat source. A thermistor, connected to a digital ohmmeter, is fully submerged in the water. A liquid-in-glass thermometer is also placed in the water near the thermistor to record the temperature.

Give one reason why using a water bath is preferred to heating the thermistor directly with a flame.
