Figure 1 represents a model of air molecules in a vertical column of Earth's atmosphere.

A vertical column divided into three sections: 'Below 10 km' at the bottom, '10 to 30 km' in the middle, and 'Above 30 km' at the top. The 'Below 10 km' section contains a very high concentration of closely spaced dots representing air molecules. The '10 to 30 km' section has fewer, more spread-out dots. The 'Above 30 km' section contains only a few, very widely spaced dots.

Use Figure 1 to explain how the density of the atmosphere varies with height above the Earth's surface.
