A light, horizontal rod is balanced on a pivot. A small permanent magnet is attached to the left side of the rod, directly above an electromagnet fixed to the bench.
When a current flows in the electromagnet, it exerts an attractive downward force, FFF, on the permanent magnet.
To balance this force and bring the rod back into horizontal equilibrium, the student hangs an additional weight of 0.080 N on the right side of the rod, at a distance of 10.5 cm from the pivot.
