A 30 cm ruler is pivoted at its centre (the 15 cm mark).

The ruler is balanced when no external forces act on it.

Figure 1 shows two downward forces, $F_1\,$ and $F_2$ , acting on the ruler.

Figure 1: A 30 cm ruler with a pivot at its center (15 cm mark). A downward force F1 = 4.5 N acts at the 7 cm mark. A second downward force F2 = 4.0 N acts at the 24 cm mark.

Use the principle of moments to show that the ruler in Figure 1 is balanced.
