A geophysicist is conducting a geomagnetic survey to locate an underground basaltic intrusion. They use a portable magnetometer with a digital display to map the local magnetic field vector.
The display shows:
- The total magnetic field strength (in μT\mu\text{T}μT).
- A circular compass dial indicating the direction (azimuth bearing in degrees) of the horizontal component of the magnetic field.
The geophysicist records two readings:
- Screen A shows the baseline regional magnetic field far from any geological anomalies.
- Screen B shows the reading when standing directly above the suspected basaltic intrusion.
