Question 14
H

A traveller pulls a suitcase along a horizontal floor at a constant velocity.

The traveller pulls the handle with a force of 60 N at an angle of 40∘40^{\circ}40∘ above the horizontal.

The weight of the suitcase is 150 N.

a.

Draw a scale vector diagram to resolve the 60 N force into a horizontal component and a vertical component.

Use your diagram to determine the size of each component.

[3]
b.

Determine the normal contact force of the floor on the suitcase.

[2]
c.

Give the size of the resistive force on the suitcase.

[1]
d.

The traveller lowers the handle so that it makes a smaller angle with the horizontal. The traveller still pulls with a force of 60 N.

Assume that the resistive force does not change.

Explain why the suitcase now accelerates.
