In an industrial electrostatic precipitator, fine dust and ash particles are cleaned from flue gases. A high voltage is applied to a wire electrode, creating a strong negative charge, whilst a nearby metal collecting plate is grounded. Fine ash particles passing through the system acquire a negative charge.
