How waves transfer energy

All waves transfer energy from one place to another, but they do not transfer matter overall. In mechanical waves, particles in the material oscillate about fixed positions while the disturbance and energy move through the material. Electromagnetic waves, including light, transfer energy without requiring particles in a material and can travel through a vacuum.
