An earthquake detector (seismometer) uses electromagnetic induction to record ground vibrations. A diagram of a simple seismometer. A heavy permanent magnet is suspended vertically from a support frame by a spring. Surrounding the lower part of the suspended magnet is a cylindrical coil of copper wire that is fixed firmly to the base of the frame. The base of the frame rests on the ground. The two ends of the coil are connected to a data logger to record any electrical current. Explain how ground vibrations (seismic waves) cause an electrical current to be detected and recorded by the data logger.
