Health, fitness, exercise, performance and components of fitness

Start point: what is “fitness” actually for?

In GCSE PE, fitness is not just “being sporty” or “having big muscles”. Fitness is about whether your body can cope with the demands placed on it.

A marathon runner, a rugby prop and a gymnast can all be “fit”, but in very different ways. The key is to match the type of fitness to the activity.

Definition

Health, fitness, exercise and performance

  • Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
  • Fitness is the ability to meet the demands of the environment.
  • Exercise is a form of physical activity done to maintain or improve health and/or fitness.
  • Performance is how well a task or sporting activity is completed.

Health

Health includes more than the body.

  • Physical health: your body systems working well, such as the heart, lungs, muscles and joints.
  • Mental health: emotional well-being, confidence, motivation and ability to cope with stress.
  • Social health: relationships, teamwork and feeling connected to others.

For example, playing football with friends may improve physical health through movement, mental health through enjoyment, and social health through teamwork.

Fitness

Fitness depends on the demands of the environment. In sport, that environment might be a match, race, routine or training session.

A 100 m sprinter needs explosive speed and power. A marathon runner needs excellent cardiovascular fitness. A badminton player needs agility, reaction time and coordination.

So, fitness is specific: you are fit for something.

Exercise

Exercise is planned or purposeful physical activity. Walking to the shop is physical activity, but doing a 30-minute run to improve aerobic endurance is exercise.

Exercise can improve health and fitness when it is regular, suitable and safe.

Performance

Performance is the outcome: how effectively you complete the sporting task.

A basketball player’s performance might be judged by successful shots, defensive positioning, assists and decision-making. Fitness helps, but performance also depends on skill, tactics, confidence and experience.

The relationship

Exercise can improve fitness and health. Better fitness can improve performance, but only if the fitness gained matches the demands of the sport.

Example

Linking exercise, fitness and performance

A netball goal attack starts interval training twice a week.

  1. The exercise chosen is interval training because it involves repeated bursts of work with rest periods, similar to the stop-start nature of netball.
  2. This can improve fitness components such as cardiovascular fitness, speed and agility, because the player repeatedly runs, changes direction and recovers.
  3. Improved fitness may improve performance because the goal attack can keep moving into space and make sharper attacking runs late in the match.
Common Mistake

Fitness does not mean one thing

Do not write “the performer is fit” without saying what type of fitness they need. A strong weightlifter and an aerobically fit marathon runner are both fit, but for different demands.

Components of fitness

A component of fitness is a specific part of fitness that helps a performer meet the demands of their sport.

The components are often grouped into:

  • Health-related fitness components: important for general health and physical capacity.
  • Skill-related fitness components: important for performing movements effectively in sport.

Health-related fitness components

Cardiovascular fitness, also called aerobic endurance

Cardiovascular fitness is the ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the working muscles during continuous activity.

It is also called aerobic endurance because it uses oxygen to release energy over a longer period.

It is important for:

  • a marathon runner maintaining pace for the whole race
  • a football midfielder covering large distances during a match
  • a swimmer completing a long-distance event

A performer with good cardiovascular fitness can delay fatigue and recover more effectively between efforts.

Strength

Strength is the amount of force a muscle can exert against a resistance.

It is important when a performer must push, pull, lift, hold or tackle.

Examples include:

  • a weightlifter lifting a heavy barbell
  • a rugby player driving forward in a scrum
  • a gymnast holding a strong body position on the rings

Strength is not only for “big” athletes. A tennis player needs strength to control powerful shots, and a climber needs strength to pull their body upwards.

Muscular endurance

Muscular endurance is the ability of a muscle or muscle group to repeatedly contract over a period of time without tiring.

It is different from strength. Strength is about maximum force; muscular endurance is about repeating force again and again.

It is important for:

  • a rower repeatedly pulling through the stroke
  • a boxer throwing repeated punches across several rounds
  • a cyclist maintaining repeated leg action during a long race

Flexibility

Flexibility is the range of movement possible at a joint.

Good flexibility can help a performer use correct technique and reduce the chance of some injuries.

It is important for:

  • a gymnast performing a split leap
  • a hurdler clearing the hurdle efficiently
  • a goalkeeper stretching to reach a shot
Common Mistake

Flexibility is joint-specific

A performer can be flexible at one joint but not another. For example, a gymnast may have excellent hip flexibility but still need to improve shoulder flexibility.

Body composition

Body composition is the percentage of body weight that is fat, muscle and bone.

Different sports suit different body compositions.

  • A long-distance runner often benefits from a lighter body composition to reduce energy cost.
  • A rugby prop may benefit from greater muscle mass and body mass to generate force in contact.
  • A gymnast often needs a high strength-to-weight ratio to control body movements.

Body composition is not about judging appearance. In PE, you link it to the physical demands of the activity.

Tip

Use sport-specific language

Instead of saying “a low body fat percentage is always best”, explain why a certain body composition helps in that sport or position.

Skill-related fitness components

Agility

Agility is the ability to change direction at speed while maintaining control.

It is important in sports where performers must react to opponents, the ball or space.

Examples include:

  • a netball defender changing direction to mark an attacker
  • a football winger cutting inside a defender
  • a hockey player dodging around an opponent

Agility combines speed, balance and coordination.

Balance

Balance is the ability to keep the body’s centre of mass over its base of support.

  • Static balance means holding a still position, such as a gymnast holding a handstand.
  • Dynamic balance means maintaining control while moving, such as a skier staying upright through turns.

Balance is important whenever a performer needs control and stability.

Coordination

Coordination is the ability to use two or more body parts together smoothly and efficiently.

It is important in skills where timing matters.

Examples include:

  • a tennis player watching the ball and swinging the racket at the right time
  • a basketball player dribbling while scanning for teammates
  • a cricket batter coordinating eyes, hands and feet to play a shot

Power

Power is the ability to use strength quickly. A simple way to remember it is:

Power is important for explosive actions.

Examples include:

  • a sprinter driving out of the blocks
  • a high jumper taking off
  • a volleyball player jumping to spike the ball
  • a shot putter throwing with force and speed

Power is not just being strong. The movement must also be fast.

Reaction time

Reaction time is the time taken to respond to a stimulus.

A stimulus is something a performer reacts to, such as a starting gun, whistle, opponent’s movement or ball flight.

Reaction time is important for:

  • a goalkeeper reacting to a shot
  • a sprinter responding to the starting gun
  • a table tennis player reacting to a fast serve

Shorter reaction time can give a performer an advantage because they begin their response sooner.

Speed

Speed is the ability to move all or part of the body quickly.

It can involve:

  • whole-body speed, such as a winger sprinting down the pitch
  • limb speed, such as a boxer throwing a fast punch
  • acceleration, such as a footballer reaching top speed over a short distance

Speed is especially important in sprinting, attacking runs, fast breaks and chasing opponents.

Relative importance: choosing the key components

In exams, you are often asked which components are most important for a sport. The best answer depends on the exact activity, event or position.

For example, “athletics” is too broad. A 100 m sprinter and a marathon runner need very different fitness components.

Choosing key fitness components for a sport

A student says the most important components for a basketball point guard are speed, agility and coordination.

  1. Speed is relevant because the point guard may need to sprint quickly during a fast break or recover into defence.
  2. Agility is relevant because they must change direction at speed to dodge defenders while keeping control of the ball.
  3. Coordination is relevant because they must dribble, pass and scan the court at the same time.
  4. These components are more specific than simply saying “fitness”, because they are linked to the actual movements and decisions used in basketball.

How to compare components

When deciding relative importance, ask yourself:

  • What movement happens most often?
  • Is the activity long and continuous, short and explosive, or stop-start?
  • Does the performer need to overcome resistance?
  • Does the performer need precise control or quick reactions?
  • Does the position or event change the demands?

For a marathon runner, cardiovascular fitness is usually more important than reaction time because the event is long and continuous. For a goalkeeper, reaction time may be more important than cardiovascular fitness because they must respond quickly to shots.

Always link the component to a sporting action. “Agility is important” is weaker than “Agility helps a netball defender change direction quickly to stay with an attacker.”

Exam technique

In the exam

  1. Define first, then apply. If asked about a component, give the meaning and link it to a sporting action.
  2. Be specific about the sport, event or position. A defender, goalkeeper and striker may need different components.
  3. Avoid vague phrases. Replace “it helps them play better” with exactly how it improves performance, such as “change direction quickly to mark an opponent.”

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. Fitness is the ability to meet the demands of the environment, so someone is fit for a specific task rather than simply "fit" in one general way.
