A cylinder is a 3D solid with two equal, parallel circular faces and one curved surface. The key measurements are radius rrr, diameter ddd, and height hhh, with d=2rd = 2rd=2r.

Two circle facts come up again and again: area A=πr2A = \pi r^2A=πr2 and circumference C=2πrC = 2\pi rC=2πr. If the question gives the diameter, halve it before substituting into any cylinder formula.

The curved surface can be unwrapped into a rectangle. Its width is the circumference 2πr2\pi r2πr and its height is hhh, which is why surface area involves 2πrh2\pi rh2πrh.
