Prism with one repeated end face labelled cross-section and an arrow labelled length of prism.

A prism has the same 2D shape all the way through, so the repeated face is called the cross-section. The distance it extends is the length or depth of the prism.

To find the volume, first work out the area of the cross-section, then multiply by the prism length. Use V=A×LV = A \times LV=A×L, and write the answer in cubic units such as cm3\text{cm}^{3}cm3 or m3\text{m}^{3}m3.
