The battle for the remote

Text 1: Best of Five, by Leonard Ashcombe

An original short story extract.

It had rained since breakfast, and by three o’clock Zara and Ibrahim had been fighting over the television remote for most of the afternoon. She wanted the baking programme. He wanted the motor racing. The remote had been hidden under a cushion, sat on, thrown and, at one point, dropped in the fish tank, from which it emerged still working. Grandad had been asleep in his armchair through all of it. Then he opened one eye, held out his hand, and waited until Ibrahim, sulking, placed the dripping remote in his palm. He took out the batteries and put them in his cardigan pocket. Then he went to the cupboard under the stairs and came back with a battered box of dominoes. ‘Winner chooses the channel,’ he said, tipping them out on the rug. ‘Best of five.’ Neither of them noticed when the rain stopped.

Explain two ways Grandad ends the argument over the remote.
