Getting ready for the party

Text 1: Wilton Road, by Agnes Thornbury

An original novel extract.

The street party was due to start at two, and at half past twelve Wilton Road still looked like a building site. The bunting was the first problem. Mr Osei had bought two hundred metres of it, but nobody had a ladder tall enough to reach the lamp posts, so Dev’s dad stood on the roof of his car while Dev held his ankles. Then the tables arrived from the church hall, and there were only six of them instead of twelve, because the scouts had borrowed the rest. Mrs Lambert went from door to door collecting kitchen tables, ironing boards and a pasting table that still had wallpaper paste on it. By two o’clock the road was lined with furniture of every height, covered in borrowed tablecloths, and the bunting dipped and rose between the lamp posts like a line of washing in a breeze.

Explain two problems the neighbours face while getting ready for the street party.
