Text 1: The Saturday art club, by Amina Rahman
An original contemporary blog.
I had put my name down for the Saturday art club because I like drawing, but on the bus there I kept checking the address in my phone. I was sure that everyone else would already know one another.
When I reached the room, I was five minutes late. A few people looked up as I opened the door, and my cheeks burned. I found a chair at the end of the table and began unpacking my pencils without speaking.
After a while, the club leader asked me to work with another new member. We started comparing our sketches, and soon I was talking as if I had been there for weeks. At the end of the morning, I felt relieved and pleased that I had not turned round and gone home.
Text 2: Leo takes his place, by Leo Morgan
An original contemporary diary.
Tonight I went to my first rehearsal with the youth orchestra. My stomach tightened as I walked towards the hall, and I wondered whether I would be able to keep up with the other players.
Then the instruments began warming up. The mixture of quiet notes and sudden bursts of sound made me eager to join in. The conductor gave me a clear part, which helped me settle.
I lost my place once and felt disappointed when the others carried on without me. Still, I packed my instrument away with a smile. I have decided to come back next Wednesday.
