Question 11

The travel alarm

Text: an original contemporary personal account-style practice extract.

My stop on the overnight train was due just before dawn, so I packed a small travel alarm. Its quiet vibration woke me without disturbing the passenger in the next seat, and the illuminated face meant I could check the time without turning on the carriage light. Its small buttons were awkward when I was half asleep, and I had to remember to pack a spare battery. I still asked the guard to confirm the stop before I gathered my bags.

From the extract, give two ways in which the travel alarm helped the writer on the train.
