The book-repair session
Text: an original contemporary event-feature-style practice extract.
The book-repair table was barely wide enough for two open books. A volunteer pressed a strip of cloth along a torn spine, smoothing it with the care of someone laying a path across a gap. Around her, visitors waited with books that had loosened, split or simply grown tired of their covers.
A girl brought forward a cookbook whose pages had fallen into a loose stack. The volunteer did not reach for the glue. She asked the girl to arrange the pages first, and together they found that one recipe had been tucked in upside down. The queue behind them shifted, but nobody called for them to hurry.
By the time the repaired book was closed, its cover still showed a pale crease. The girl ran a finger along it, then carried the book away. On the table, another damaged spine waited beneath the lamp.
