Question 254

Text: an original contemporary advice-column-style practice extract.

At the school council meeting, I wrote my suggestion on a piece of paper before I went in. I wanted a quiet place where pupils could read at lunchtime. The room was full, and when the chair asked for ideas, I nearly kept the paper in my pocket.

You do not need to arrive with a perfect plan. Say what you have noticed and why it matters to you. You could ask whether the idea is possible, or suggest trying it for a short time. The council may not be able to agree to every suggestion, and speaking up does not guarantee a change. It does let people consider an idea they might not otherwise hear.

I read my sentence aloud. The council asked a question about where the quiet place might be, and we began discussing possible rooms. Nothing was decided that afternoon. Still, I left glad I had spoken: a suggestion can start a conversation without having to solve everything at once.

The writer tries to encourage pupils to put forward suggestions at school council meetings without making them feel that they must have a perfect plan or will certainly get their way.

Evaluate how successfully this is achieved. In your answer, consider how the writer presents the situation, the advice given and the ending. Support your views with detailed reference to the extract.
