Question 56

A climb to the lantern room

Text: an original contemporary review-style practice extract.

The lighthouse visit began in the small room where the keeper’s logbooks were displayed. A guide explained how the building had been used, then led us up the narrow staircase. The steps were steep, and we had to pause briefly when another group came down.

The moment I valued most came at the top: the guide let us stay in the lantern room after the rest of the tour had moved on. I could look out across the water without having to hurry, noticing the changing patches of light on the waves. I left with the view still in my mind.

Identify one part of the visit that the writer particularly valued.
