Question 207

The pieces completed without me

Text: an original contemporary technology-column-style practice extract.

I had spent twenty-four minutes completing a jigsaw on my phone when three pieces remained in one corner. I put the phone down to answer the door. When I returned, the pieces glided into position by themselves, coloured lights crossed the screen and the word COMPLETED appeared.

The explanation was hidden in the help menu. If the puzzle detected no activity for ninety seconds, its "finish assist" could place the remaining pieces automatically. My friend uses the same feature because a tremor makes dragging small shapes difficult. For her, it changes the puzzle from something frustrating into something she can finish independently. I would not want that option removed.

My difficulty was that I had not known it was operating. A jigsaw is not simply a picture waiting to be revealed. Its satisfaction comes from testing possibilities, noticing errors and eventually finding the position that works. The application recorded the completion as mine, even though it had made the final decisions.

I deleted the result and began again with the assistance switched off. The second attempt took longer. There were no coloured lights when I placed the last piece, and the finished image was exactly the same. Even so, the quieter ending felt more satisfying because I knew how it had been reached. Help can make an activity possible, but it should not disguise how much of the success it has supplied.

In this extract, the writer tries to show that automatic help can make an achievement feel less satisfying.

Evaluate how successfully this is achieved. Support your views with detailed reference to the extract.
