Question 126

Correcting the credit

Text A: an original contemporary practice extract.

A preview of the school magazine described me as the person who had planned the community garden’s new planting layout. I had produced the final drawing, but it was based on Noor’s measurements and on suggestions collected from the other volunteers. The editor said that naming one designer made the article easier to follow.

Before the magazine was printed, I asked for the paragraph to be changed. The revised version explained that Noor had prepared the measurements and that the group had developed the plan together. My drawing still appeared, but it was no longer presented as the source of every decision. A tidy story was not worth keeping if it made several people’s work invisible.

Text B: an original contemporary practice extract.

At the end of a concert, the organiser invited Tomas, one of the technicians, onto the stage and praised him for rescuing the performance when the sound system failed. The audience began to applaud, but Tomas asked to use the microphone before accepting the organiser’s certificate.

He explained that a stage assistant had traced the fault to a damaged cable and that a sound engineer from the visiting choir had supplied a replacement. Tomas had fitted the cable, but he had not solved the problem alone. He called both people forward and divided the applause between them. Correcting the announcement made his own part sound smaller, yet it gave the audience a more accurate account of how the concert had continued.

What similarities are there between the responses to receiving inaccurate credit in these extracts? Use evidence from both texts to support your answer.
