Question 201

Beyond the throwing line

Text A: an original contemporary practice extract.

Each competitor received three sheets of paper and thirty minutes before the distance round began. My first design looked convincing on the table and dropped almost immediately when I threw it. The second turned sharply towards a chair. I narrowed one fold, pressed the wings flat with my thumbnail and tried again.

In practice, it was easy to blame the room, the paper or my throwing arm. The marked line on the floor was less interested in explanations. During the official round, my final plane travelled cleanly across the hall and landed well short of the leading flight. I finished seventh. The result did not flatter my design, but it told me something useful about it.

That clear measurement was what made the competition satisfying. A plane either travelled beyond a distance or it did not; confidence could not carry it farther. I admired the winning flight because everyone could see why it had won. On the journey home, I unfolded my plane and studied the creases. Seventh place had already become the beginning of another attempt.

Text B: an original contemporary practice extract.

At the paper-aeroplane competition, one entry climbed, circled above the throwing area and returned almost to its owner’s feet. The audience applauded for longer than they had applauded some of the farthest flights. Officially, however, it had achieved very little. The tape measure recorded only where it landed, not the journey it had taken.

A distance round offers a simple result, and simplicity has advantages. Nobody needs to guess which plane crossed the most floor. Yet the single measurement gradually made the entries resemble one another. Broad-winged designs disappeared from later attempts, while narrow pointed planes waited in an increasingly identical row.

The competition could preserve its distance prize while adding rounds for time in the air or accuracy towards a marked landing area. Those challenges would still produce winners and disappointed competitors, but they would reward different decisions. Measurement should help us notice achievement rather than reduce every kind of flight to one number. Before choosing a rule, organisers should decide whether they want to discover the farthest plane or the widest range of ideas.

Compare how the writers present their ideas and perspectives about paper-aeroplane competitions. Support your comparisons with detailed references to both texts.
