Question 106

The problem of more than one final version

Text A: an original contemporary practice extract.

An adult learning centre prepared a booklet for its autumn short courses. Tutors sent alterations in email messages, attached tables and notes left at reception. Two documents were both labelled ‘final’, although one had a pottery class on Tuesday and the other on Thursday. A room change appeared in a spreadsheet but not in the page proof sent to the printer.

The editor noticed the conflict only when a tutor asked why an old time was still being advertised. Printing was paused while every tutor confirmed the details. The centre made one dated master list and issued a correction slip for the copies already posted. Enrolment opened later than planned because staff would not release another uncertain schedule.

Text B: an original contemporary practice extract.

A charity arranged a Saturday van round to collect donated furniture. Households changed collection times by telephone, text message and voicemail. The coordinator updated an online sheet, but the driver left with a printed route prepared earlier that morning. At the first address, nobody was home; at the next, the list did not mention that a large cupboard needed two people to move it.

The team stopped the round and contacted each household again. They numbered the revised route sheets and agreed that one person would record every change. Calls and a second crew solved the immediate problems, but the van completed fewer collections than expected.

Both extracts show plans being disrupted because information has changed.

What similarities are there in the way changing information affects each plan? Use evidence from both texts to support your answer.
