Question 39

Inside the bell tower

Text: an original contemporary personal account-style practice extract.

I joined a tour of the town hall’s bell tower expecting to concentrate on the narrow stairs. Once we reached the top, however, I enjoyed recognising familiar streets from a completely different angle. The guide also let us stand quietly beside the clock mechanism, and I liked hearing its soft clicks between the much louder strikes. The room was dusty, and I had to bend beneath several low beams, but neither inconvenience spoiled the visit.

Give two details from the extract about what the writer enjoyed during the visit.
