Question 101

After the clock started again

Text: an original contemporary community-feature-style practice extract.

When the restored town clock struck twelve, the chair of the committee told the crowd, “At last, Arun has put our clock right.” Everyone applauded, and I did too. The statement was accurate enough to sound complete: I had led the repair. Yet it folded a week of uncertainty, and several people’s work, into my name.

On Tuesday, the clock stopped after nineteen minutes. On Wednesday, it kept time through lunch before falling behind again. Each hopeful test made the next failure harder to announce. Lena recorded every stoppage. The caretaker opened the tower early and stayed after closing. Shopkeepers compared the clock with their own watches and reported when it began to lose time. I made the final adjustment, but I could not have known it was final without them.

By Saturday, the clock had kept time from morning until evening. There was no dramatic instant when success became certain; we trusted an accumulation of ordinary checks. I enjoyed the applause at the ceremony. Afterwards, however, I asked the newsletter to name the other people and mention the failed starts. A public announcement needs a clear ending, and the work had earned one. But completion was not a single act, and saying less should not mean remembering less.

In this extract, the writer tries to show that a brief public account can make a successful project seem more straightforward and individual than it was.

Evaluate how successfully this is achieved. Support your views with detailed reference to the extract.
