Question 97

Text A: an original contemporary practice extract.

At the repair café, visitors used to arrive with a toaster or a loose chair and wait to see who was free. The new appointment board has made the first hour calmer. I booked a lamp for Saturday and knew someone would have time to look at it. The board does not fix anything, of course, but it gives people a reason to bring an object through the door.

Last month, a visitor arrived with a radio that had stopped working. Because of the booking, the volunteers had time to hear what had happened before they began. They could not repair it that day, but one of them suggested a next step. Without the appointment, the visitor might have left after seeing the queue.

I would keep the board, while leaving a few spaces for people who have not planned ahead. A booking can make a welcome more dependable, but it should not turn the café into a place where only the organised feel entitled to ask for help.

Text B: an original contemporary practice extract.

The appointment board at the repair café has turned a useful drop-in into something that resembles a waiting list for a service. The Saturday slots are filled before some people have even decided whether their kettle is worth bringing in. The board gives the impression of order, but it also makes a simple visit feel like an application.

There are practical reasons to know what is coming through the door. A volunteer can set out suitable tools, and visitors may not have to stand around. Yet planning every conversation in advance misses part of the café’s appeal: someone can arrive with an awkward object and discover that another person has met the same problem.

Keep a small number of appointments for repairs that need extra time, but leave the rest of the session open. A board should help people meet one another, not decide who gets to enter the conversation. The best welcome may be less orderly, but it is also less likely to turn uncertainty into a reason to stay away.

Compare how the writers present their ideas and perspectives about appointment systems at community repair cafés. Support your comparisons with detailed references to both texts.
