Question 60

Plans revised before the event

Text A: an original contemporary practice extract.

When the railway announced that no morning trains would run on the Saturday of a book festival, the organisers reserved a minibus from the nearest town. The booking form asked visitors to indicate whether they would depend on this transport, and the coordinator used their replies to plan the pick-up.

A week before the festival, the railway moved its engineering work to Sunday and published a normal Saturday timetable. The coordinator compared the new arrival times with the festival programme and found that visitors could reach the opening events by train. She cancelled the minibus while a refund was still available and sent the revised train details to everyone who had requested a lift. The arrangement was withdrawn before anyone used it because the disruption it anticipated would no longer take place.

Text B: an original contemporary practice extract.

A regional athletics meeting hired a portable changing unit after an unusually large number of teams entered. The permanent changing rooms would not have provided enough space, so the additional unit was due to be delivered on the morning of the competition.

Several teams later withdrew when another fixture was moved to the same date. The meeting secretary revised the room allocations and confirmed that the remaining competitors could use the permanent facilities without overcrowding. He cancelled the delivery and issued an updated allocation with the final timetable. The extra unit had been a reasonable response to the original entry list, but the fall in attendance meant that it was no longer required.

Both texts describe organisers reconsidering arrangements they had made for an event.

What similarities are there between the ways the planned arrangements stopped being needed in these extracts? Use evidence from both texts to support your answer.
