Question 87

The night when nothing crossed the river

Text: an original contemporary wildlife-documentary-review-style practice extract.

The trailer showed an otter breaking the surface in a burst of silver water. The programme itself began differently. For ninety uninterrupted seconds, the camera remained fixed on an empty bend in the river while two researchers waited behind a screen of reeds. A clock in the corner advanced from 11.46.00 pm to 11.47.30 pm. Nothing appeared.

This was not simply unused footage left in by mistake. One researcher whispered a checklist of what they could hear: wind in the rushes, a distant gate and water passing over stones. She noted that none of these sounds confirmed an animal’s presence. When a dark shape moved near the opposite bank, her colleague did not immediately name it. He waited until it emerged as a drifting branch.

Wildlife programmes often compress patience into a few dramatic seconds. This sequence restored some of the missing time. It also showed the discipline involved in refusing an exciting identification when the evidence was unclear. The empty river did not prove that no otters were nearby; it proved only that the team had not seen one during those ninety seconds.

The scene came close to outlasting my attention, and a longer version might have felt self-important. Yet the eventual sighting later in the programme benefited from this restraint. When the researchers finally said what they could see, I trusted that they had earned the certainty of the words.

In this extract, the writer tries to show that an uneventful period of wildlife observation strengthens a documentary rather than wasting viewers’ time.

Evaluate how successfully this is achieved. Support your views with detailed reference to the extract.
