Question 84

Text A: an original contemporary practice extract.

On the first day I worked from home, I arranged my laptop at the kitchen table and kept glancing at the clock. The quiet felt less like freedom than a room in which I had forgotten an appointment. Then I began the report I had been postponing. No one stopped to ask where a file was; no conversation drifted across the desk. By lunchtime, I had finished more than I expected.

That does not mean the office is merely a noisy obstacle. A colleague once noticed a mistake in my figures because we happened to be discussing something else. At home, I have to remember to ask for that sort of help. Still, I like being able to shape the day around the task: a short break outside, then another hour of concentration.

I would not want every working day to be silent. But after the first uncertain morning, I found that home could be a place to do careful work, not simply a place to wait for the office to begin.

Text B: an original contemporary practice extract.

Working at home gives me a clear desk, a warm mug and, sometimes, a finished list of tasks. I can concentrate when I need to. Yet I miss the office before I have even opened my messages. There, I can turn to someone and ask a question without arranging a time for it. Often the answer is only half the benefit; the conversation reveals what the team is thinking about.

I tried to make my home day feel like an office day. I set a start time and took lunch away from the screen. The routine helped, but it could not create the small exchanges that happen between tasks. A quiet afternoon leaves space for my own thoughts; it also leaves me responsible for noticing when I have misunderstood something.

I am not arguing that everyone should be in the same room all week. Some work needs uninterrupted attention, and home can provide it. But I would choose a shared workplace for the days when a plan is still taking shape. A meeting can be scheduled; the useful question that changes its direction is less predictable.

Compare how the writers present their ideas and perspectives about working from home. Support your comparisons with detailed references to both texts.
