Taking apart the clock
Text: an original contemporary personal account-style practice extract.
The mantel clock had stopped several times before I decided to open its wooden case. Inside, the brass wheels and narrow springs seemed far more complicated than I had expected. Before removing the hands and lifting the clock face, I took a close photograph of their positions. I wanted a record that would help me return every piece to the correct place when I put the clock together again. The repair itself took only a few minutes, but rebuilding the clock took most of the afternoon.
Why did the writer take a close photograph before removing the clock face? Identify one reason from the extract.
