Question 40

The greenhouse after closing time

Text: an original contemporary review-style practice extract.

By the time I reached the community greenhouse, the visitors had gone and the glass was holding the last light of the day. From outside, the rows of pots looked like an audience waiting for its cue. I had expected a tidy display; instead, a watering can stood in the middle of the path.

The volunteer who showed me round did not apologise for the clutter. She lifted a tray of seedlings from a bench and pointed out the faint green hooks beginning to uncurl. I leaned closer. A label had slipped into the damp soil, and its name was blurred beyond reading. She turned it over and wrote a fresh one, slowly, while I held the tray steady.

We finished after the light had left the roof. The greenhouse seemed less like a finished exhibit than a place caught between tasks. At the door, I looked back at the seedlings and the newly written label. The words were clear, but the small plants still had all their growing to do.
