Question 82

The repair café

Text: an original contemporary personal account-style practice extract.

I took my broken desk lamp to the community repair café expecting to leave it with an expert. Instead, a volunteer showed me how to tighten the loose connection myself. I liked being trusted to use the tools rather than simply watching. The room was busy and I had to wait for a screwdriver, but nobody hurried me. Best of all, the lamp worked when I switched it on at home.

Give one detail from the extract which shows what the writer liked about the visit to the repair café.
