The model-engine workshop

Text: an original contemporary report-style practice extract.

The railway museum reopened its model-engine workshop with a long workbench beneath the windows. Behind a glass partition, visitors could watch the restorer use a magnifying lamp to inspect the smallest gears of a miniature locomotive. Beside the bench were a tray of labelled screws and a notebook in which the order of removal was recorded.

Before the doors opened, staff tested the lamp and wiped the glass. During the morning, the restorer paused to explain why an apparently clean gear still needed replacing.

From the opening paragraph, identify two things that were beside the workbench.
