Packing the sound equipment

Text: an original contemporary personal account-style practice extract.

After the rehearsal, I offered to pack the microphones and speakers into their cases. I had seen one helper wind a lead tightly round his elbow, but I coiled each of mine in loose loops over my hand instead, because the technician had warned me that tight twisting could break the thin wires inside. A broken lead, she said, might crackle halfway through a song. Packing took me twice as long as everyone expected. The next morning, every microphone worked at the first test.

Identify one reason the writer gives in the extract for coiling the leads in loose loops.
