Question 234

The rehearsal was the point

Text: an original contemporary editorial-account-style practice extract.

The flyer for our theatre’s open evening called it “a performance you won’t forget”. That phrase made the event sound finished. It was not. An actor lost a line, the director stopped the scene, and a chair was dragged back to its mark. A few people looked at one another as if they had arrived at the wrong event.

Then the director asked the audience what they thought the pause before the final speech was doing. One visitor said it felt like a warning; another thought it gave the character time to change their mind. The actors tried the moment again, this time with a longer silence. We were no longer waiting for the scene to go smoothly. We were watching choices take shape, and the discussion had become part of the evening.

A polished performance has its own pleasure, and an open rehearsal cannot offer that. But the flyer should tell people which kind of evening they are choosing. Calling unfinished work a complete show may win a few bookings; it also gives newcomers a reason to distrust the next invitation. A plain description leaves room for the unexpected without pretending that every stumble was planned.

In this extract, the writer tries to persuade readers that an unfinished event should be advertised honestly rather than presented as a polished show.

Evaluate how successfully this is achieved. Support your views with detailed reference to the extract.
