The light that counted moths
Text: an original contemporary field-report-style practice extract.
At midnight, the white sheet looked less like scientific equipment than washing forgotten in a field. It had been stretched between two poles, with a lamp shining towards it, but beyond that pale rectangle the hedge and grass had disappeared into darkness. For eleven minutes, nothing arrived. The volunteers checked the lamp, checked their watches and began speaking in whispers, as though noise might frighten away something that was not there.
Then a speck struck the sheet. Another circled the lamp before landing with its wings folded into a sharp roof. Within minutes, the blank cloth had become a restless noticeboard: pale triangles, brown commas and tiny flickering marks settled, lifted and changed places. One volunteer held a guide open while another recorded what they saw. At first, the notes had said only “small” or “brown”. Soon the margins were crowded with finer observations: silver edges, striped bodies, wings like dry leaves. Waiting had sharpened their attention.
Each moth was counted and released away from the lamp. By four o’clock, the list filled three pages, although no single arrival had seemed important enough to announce. When dawn thinned the darkness, the lamp was switched off and the last moth vanished into the hedge. In daylight, the sheet became ordinary cloth again, creased and slightly damp. The notebook, however, remained crowded. What had first looked empty had taught the volunteers how much the darkness contained.
