Question 53

Before the bakery opened

Text: an original contemporary personal account-style practice extract.

I attended a bread-making lesson before the bakery opened for the day. I had imagined that waiting for dough to rise would be dull, but I enjoyed watching its shape alter as the room became warmer. I was also pleased that the baker explained the purpose of each stage instead of simply giving us a list of instructions. Flour covered my sleeves, and the early start left me tired by lunchtime, yet I would happily take another lesson.

From the extract, give two aspects of the lesson that pleased the writer.
