Question 168

A community mapmaking studio has held an open afternoon for visitors. Your notes describe what was available:

  • Visitors could compare an old street map with a recent one.
  • A volunteer showed how symbols are used to represent places on a map.
  • At a table, visitors could trace a route between two local landmarks.
  • The route activity was popular, and some visitors had to wait for a turn.
  • The instructions at the tracing table were brief, so a few people asked for help.

A youth culture website is collecting reviews of local events. Contribute a review for its teenage readers. Some readers enjoy finding out about their local area; others may not have considered how maps are made.

Evaluate the open afternoon's success in drawing visitors into the activities and helping them understand maps. Use the notes as a starting point. You could consider what visitors saw, learnt and did, and whether anything could have worked better.

Your response will be assessed for communication and organisation, and for vocabulary, sentence structures, spelling and punctuation. The total includes 16 marks for vocabulary, sentence structures, spelling and punctuation.
