Question 14

Text A: an original contemporary practice extract.

My folded map still carries the pencil notes I made during my first long walk with my father. When a local walking group asked me to lead the same route, I wanted the map to be part of the day, but heavy rain was forecast.

I placed the original map beneath a clear cover on the meeting-room table and used it while explaining the route. Outside, I carried a newly printed copy. The old map no longer faced wet weather, but it had not simply been shut in a drawer: it still helped to begin a walk that mattered to me.

Text B: an original contemporary practice extract.

I made the cloth puppet for my first school play, sewing the uneven mouth several times before it moved properly. Years later, I was invited to run a puppet workshop for younger children. I wanted to bring it, although its thin seams were not strong enough for a whole group to handle.

At the workshop, I used the original puppet for my opening demonstration. The children then practised with a set of plain puppets provided by the organiser. Mine remained part of the performance, but it avoided the busiest part of the session.

How are the owners’ decisions about protecting and continuing to use their objects similar in these extracts?

In your response, consider:

  • when each original object is used
  • what is used instead during the riskier part of the activity.

Support your response with evidence from Text A and Text B.
