Crossing on the upper deck

Text: an original contemporary personal account-style practice extract.

On the short ferry crossing, I chose the open upper deck. From the rail, I could follow the whole coastline instead of catching brief glimpses through the cabin windows. The cool air also settled the queasiness I had begun to feel below. I had to hold tightly to my hat when the ferry turned, and the engine made conversation difficult. Even so, I would choose the same place again.

Give two benefits of choosing the open upper deck that are stated in the extract.
